The first line of defense for indoor air quality is your air filter…
(Never thought your IAQ needed defense, did you?) Whether in heating or cooling, your central Heating or Cooling system needs a quality air filter.
One of the most common rating systems for air filters is called Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value or MERV. The higher the MERV rating, the better the filtration. At TRS, for the average system we generally recommend a good quality filter rated MERV 8. A MERV rating higher than 8 tends to overwork the fan motor (or indoor blower motor) and a lower rating allows more contaminants to remain your home’s air than necessary.
In addition to the air quality of your home, an quality air filter is very important to the longevity of your Heating and Cooling system. If your air filter allows more contaminants to pass than necessary, then these particles can get caught in the Heating and Cooling system. This is especially an issue with an Air Conditioning system with the cooling coil becoming clogged up with these contaminants, thus quickly reducing the efficiency. And if your air filter is allowed to get excessively dirty, system efficiency and lifespan are negatively affected.
To sum up, your air filter is one of the most important items on your system. Keep your filter clean, changing it as often as necessary and use quality air filters rated MERV 8.
